API Keys
Transistor uses your own API keys to connect to AI providers. Your keys are stored locally on your device and used directly, with no intermediary.
Adding a key

Open Settings
Tap or click the Settings icon from the Dock or sidebar, then select Providers.

Choose your provider
Select Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or a custom provider from the list.

Paste your API key
Enter your key and confirm. Transistor validates the key immediately and shows your available models.
Where to get keys
Security
Your API keys are encrypted and stored in your device's secure keychain. They are never transmitted to Transistor's servers. Requests go directly from your device to the AI provider using your key.
Custom providers
To connect a self-hosted model or any OpenAI-compatible API, select Custom from the provider list and enter the base URL alongside your key. This works with Ollama, LM Studio, Together AI, Fireworks, and any other provider that follows the OpenAI API specification.
